Simple Steps to Designing the Perfect Home Cinema Room in the Midlands

The question is, how do you approach designing a home cinema setup that rivals the best elements of large movie theatres?
Here is our step by step guide to designing the perfect home cinema room in the Midlands.
How much available space do you have?
Assuming that you have chosen which room will house your home cinema, it’s important to think about how much space is available, as this will influence every other step in designing and building your cinema room, from what size screen you would like, to the ideal seating choices.
The more wall space you have available, the larger the screen you can choose, however, you should consider how close you will be sat to the screen and how good your view will be!
Choosing the interior decor
When creating your home cinema, colours play a key role in not only the design of the room, but the atmosphere you create. For large home cinema spaces, darker colours such as deep blues, greys or even black are effective in creating an effective cinema atmosphere, as there are no distractions from the screen. In smaller spaces, in some cases, warmer colours can create the impression of spaciousness.
Whilst colour is important, an element of decor that is often forgotten is the wall, floor and ceiling surfaces in your chosen room. Consider that gloss paints, tile flooring, and even laminate or hardwood flooring can be highly reflective, distracting you from the screen. For floor surfaces, carpets or a large rug in dark colours help to prevent reflections as well as helping to keep sound from echoing around the room.
When it comes to decorating the walls, it’s recommended to choose wallpaper or paints with a flat matte finish, especially on the walls behind and surrounding the screen. It’s also important not to forget the ceiling – you should also consider a matte finish, darker colour.
If you are worried about a room being too dark, you could always choose colourful upholstery for your seating.
Lighting choices
Needless to say, if your cinema environment features windows, it’s important to invest in curtains or blinds that will effectively block out natural light. Whilst a dark room makes for a more effective cinematic experience, this does not mean to say that all lighting should be turned off whilst a film is being shown. Think of public cinemas; whilst the theatre stays dark, soft lighting is always present to help people find their way in and out safely. Consider that you may need to step out of your cinema room for more snacks or for a bathroom break – installing soft lighting fixtures at low, wall and ceiling height provide enough light to see where you are going, whilst also adding to the atmosphere.
Furniture choices
When you are choosing furniture, you must again consider how much space you have available, and how many people you might like to invite for film nights or other events. You will want to make sure that everyone is seated comfortably.
If you are blessed with space, you could choose some traditional cinema seating. For a smaller room, you can always choose a large sofa that will comfortably seat your whole family, or a group of friends. Comfort is the most important thing to consider when designing a room that offers the most enjoyable home cinema experience.
