Knowle Smart Home – Control4 Solihull
About This Project
This new build smart home in Knowle, Solihull, features a Control4 home automation system, integrating all aspects of the building to allow control of the lighting, heating, alarm, CCTV, gate, music and TV’s from a single user interface / app.
Lighting control is achieved through a Control4 wireless lighting system with ZigBee keypads throughout, controlling the lighting circuits, meaning bespoke lighting scenes can be triggered from a single button press in each room, as well as the possibility to control any lighting circuit from any keypad.
Heating control is achieved through a Heatmiser Neo system. All control is actioned from the Control4 system.
Alarm control is achieved through a Texecom Premier system which is integrated with Control4 to allow alarm sensors to be used for triggering lighting scenes, as well as the ability to set/unset the alarm from the Control4 app or activate certain events such as turning on all of the ground floor lights and showing the CCTV cameras on the bedroom TV automatically if the alarm is triggered.
CCTV control is achieved through the CCTV recorder connected to the video matrix and Freeview modulator. This allows the CCTV cameras to be viewed on any TV in the house as well as the Control4 touch screens and app. Motion events from the cameras can be programmed to trigger events, such as turning on the outside lights if motion is detected at night.
In addition to alarm systems and CCTV, the automated gates are also connected to the Control4 system and can be opened or closed from it. A Control4 DS2 Doorstation has a built in keypad for access with a code, as well as intercom functions for calling the touch screens in the house and the Control4 app wherever you are in the world. In the event that you are away but need to provide access to your home, Control4 makes this possible.
For music to be played throughout the house, Bowers & Wilkins in-ceiling speakers are installed, connected back to a Control4 audio matrix and power amplifier so that music can be played in any room, either independently, or rooms can be grouped together to play the same music in multiple locations. Music sources include Spotify, Amazon Music, internet radio or AirPlay from the clients mobile devices. Favourite playlists and stations can also be saved to the system and recalled with a single button press, or they can be used as an alarm at certain times of the day, for example, as a morning wake up call.
TV’s installed throughout are connected to a Wyrestorm video matrix which has multiple Sky Q boxes connected, all installed in the central rack, with the sound coming out of the ceiling speakers. All TVs are controlled from the Control4 Neoo remotes, touch screens or Control4 app. The benefit of having a centralised video distribution system means no messy cables or equipment needing to be installed in the room locally. You only need a TV and a remote, meaning more space for storage.
A wireless mesh Wi-Fi network allows seamless roaming of mobile devices around the house for the best internet speeds anywhere in the house.
